Relationship between Stress Coping Strategies and Mental Health in Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy

Abstract

Background and Aim: The physical and mental health of the people in society is very important, one of the areas worthy of study is the study of the psychological aspects of cancer patients, which causes a lot of stress due to long-term treatment. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the relationship between stress-coping approaches and mental health in patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Methods: This descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 229 patients referred to the chemotherapy clinic at Baqiyatallah Hospital in Tehran, Iran. The sampling method was available. The study tools included a personal information questionnaire, a 28-item general health questionnaire, and a Billings and Moss coping strategies questionnaire. The data collected from the research units were analyzed by SPSS version 22 software and statistical regression tests.
Results: In this study, the age range of chemotherapy patients was between 18 and 81 years, and their average age was 51.27±13.90 years. The findings showed that 65.4% of patients undergoing chemotherapy have an unfavorable health level. According to Pearson's correlation test, there was a negative and significant relationship between general health domains and coping strategies of cognitive assessment, emotion-oriented, and physical restraint in patients undergoing chemotherapy (P=0.001).
Conclusion: The general health of chemotherapy patients is related to the coping strategies adopted by them. The results of this study can have an effective role in knowing as much as possible the effective factors in the adaptive adaptation to this disease, reducing the side effects of chemotherapy and as a result the psychological well-being of cancer patients.
