Abstract

Introduction. Ocular disorders are some of the most and important delayed complications of mustard gas that includes dry eye and some of keratopathies which may lead to blindness. Up to now, there was not any research about the pathophysiology of this problem. As for the role of oxidant/antioxidant balance system in many of ophthalmic disease, especially in dry eye and keratopathy, in this study, vitamin A and C, as antioxidant vitamins have been analyzed in the patients. Material and Methods. Vitamin C was quantities in tear and serum by Roe method. Vitamin A was determined by Bayfield method in tear. Assays were compared between the patients and normal controls. Results. Significant difference between vitamin C values in tear of cases and controls (Pvalue 0.017) and also between values in serum of two groups (P value=0.022) have seen. About vitamin A there was not any significant difference. Discussion. As for the specific importance of vitamin C for human antioxidant defense especially in eye, decrease of it disposes the eyes against free radicals from internal and environmental sources. Consequently, topical vitamin C may be efficient for the patients.
