Background and Aim: The significance of security in academic research has become increasingly critical due to the advancement of internet technologies in today’s digital age. This evolution has led to the emergence of various risks and threats that can affect both researchers and their research subjects. Consequently, the present study aims to identify the key components necessary for establishing security in research practices, particularly in the context of organizational and mission-driven research. Methods: The present study employs a cross-sectional mixed method, conducted during the first half of 2023 in three stages at a medical sciences university in Tehran. The statistical sample consisted of eight educational and research experts from the university, selected purposefully. Data were collected through an expert panel and a questionnaire. Qualitative data analysis was performed using conventional qualitative content analysis with MAXQDA software, while quantitative analysis was conducted using DEMATEL software to assess the impact and influence of various factors. Results: Qualitative data analysis resulted in the identification of 51 components, which were categorized into 8 dimensions: laws and regulations, access level, confidentiality, support, data integrity, protection of physical tools, research ethics, and awareness. In the DEMATEL analysis, the criterion of research ethics was found to have the most influence, while the awareness component was deemed highly effective. The component of receiving support exhibited the least influence among the other dimensions. Conclusion: Since there is a possibility of fraud and illegal access to information in research, it is essential to inform the research team and the subjects about the ethical considerations in research and familiarize them with the existing risks.
